HIstory and Geography

History

At Holy Trinity, we provide children with a stimulating and inspiring History curriculum which aims to give them an understanding and interest of the past.  History is a subject close to our hearts as our own school building has deep historical roots (Please see our Archives page for further information).  With this in mind, we aim to give our children opportunities to explore their own local history as well as history of the wider world.

Lessons are designed to spark the children's curiosity and provide them with opportunities to develop the key enquiry skills. Through careful planning, we aim to give the children as many first-hand experiences as possible and make use of our great local area resources.  From this, we encourage children to think critically, ask questions and discuss evidence.  These skills are carefully developed as they progress through their learning journey.

History lessons at Holy Trinity, also aim to expose children to key historical vocabulary and we use cross-curricular links, where possible, to strengthen the understanding of this vocabulary.  Throughout the school, children are exposed to high quality and engaging texts linked to the historical topic they are learning about.

Geography

At Holy Trinity, the geography curriculum is designed to reflect the context of our school and aims to give the pupils a strong sense of place and belonging. Our curriculum focuses on teaching children about the human and physical geography of their local area and community and how this compares with other locations around the world.  We aim to teach children about how to care and protect our environment and how to live sustainable lives.

We understand the importance of fieldwork in geography and provide as many opportunities as possible for the children to experience geography in 'real' life.  In every lesson, we strive to model and equip the children with key geographical vocabulary.

What do we learn about in geography?

  • Human geography:  identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the U.K., climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes, and the water cycle

  • Physical geography:  types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water

  • Place Knowledge:  landmarks, similarities and differences,

  • Locational Knowledge:  continents, countries of the U.K., identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and
